The Guild Wars revival!

After what seems to be a long time (because it was), myself and Dark1 have decided to start playing Guild Wars again.  Mainly because it is good fun and I never finished Eye of the North but also because Guild Wars 2 is coming up and you never know; in among real life, Eve Online and other games I might have time for a spot of sequel action!

Thing is Guild Wars is quite a daunting thing to come back to after so many years off, it always lent itself to more complex tactics as you had to choose 8 skills with which to see you and your team through.  That was easy when you had been playing and knew what they all were but now…

I decided to leave all my builds alone as I must have known what I was doing before, right?  But things have changed since me and Dark1 last ventured in, they’ve opened the whole game up to more solo style play.  You can have a team of 8 which is just you and 7 companions.  You can even bring in your other characters into your team as companions now (at a financial cost).  There are probably many other things we haven’t even stumbled across yet.

Then it comes to what I collected over the months I played the game… there are a myriad of items in my locker and various character’s bags that make no sense to me anymore, what do I do with my 33 platinum?  What do I do with all these materials again?  So those dungeons and other symbols on the map, what are they again?  Don’t know about you but I need to start finding all those Guild Wars wiki sites again.

Titanic – now with 3D

The GF is a big Titanic fan so obviously we had to go watch the re-release in almighty and not in any way an attempt to get more money (I’m looking at you Lucas) 3D.

To be honest when this first came out there was no chance in hell of me ever going to watch, let alone pay to watch it. But I’m older and wiser now, apparently. To be quite frank, I enjoyed it. The 3D was pointless and only made a difference on a few scenes but this was the first time I’d sat all the way through it.

The love story was a bit twee and the inaccuracies there to see, but the whole setting and sinking of the Titanic was an impressive thing to watch on the big screen.

I would have used more 3D on the nudey bit personally. Opportunity lost there me thinks.

Bigots, racists and homophobes?

There is an interesting article on Eurogamer (based on a news article on Giant Bomb) about a TV show Capcom broadcast covering a Street Fighter X Tekken tournament meant to advertise the release of said game.  In it one of the team leaders said some pretty eyebrow raising things to the lone female team member.  But in reality are all gamers bigots, racists and homophobes?

This got me reminiscing about the good old days when my mango buddies and a good few others played CS 1.6 on the esGaming private server.  We had a very good community going on, when one day a very girly voice popped up on voice comms.  Normally this would mean a pre-pubescent 11 year old had wandered onto the server and fancied shooting us, but not on this occassion this was actually a real girl.  After we’d got over the shock of a girl playing a FPS (hey, we can all be a bit ignorant sometimes), we got back to shooting and planting / disarming bombs.

What I remember of those days is that we didn’t make sexist remarks and in fact we were quite protective, especially when randoms came on making lewd comments.  I’m sure there was banter, but I don’t think we ever crossed the line like this Aris guy has.

We weren’t very tolerant of anti-gay, anti-jew or racist comments either.  Nor swearing even though I admit to being a bit of a potty mouth.  The server was lead by a couple of centered and all round bloody good chaps so that was always a good start.  But like I said in the comments section on EG; with a private server you can control what is going on, public domain and people think they can get away with saying whatever they want to.

Still, there was one good thing that come out of a couple of sweary sessions on the esGaming ventrilo channel…

Playing with spreadsheets

Unlike the rest of the human race, I do really enjoy playing EVE Online.  Granted, people will say to you that it is nothing more than spreadsheets with eye candy graphics on the front end but believe me when I say that it is far more than that.

I’ve been a member of my corp for some time now, although we’ve played it safe in the past we have recently branched out into more and more fiendish adventures.  Setting up traps to blow up unsuspecting thieves, trying to extort money out of naughty types and flying into other people’s wormholes and either trying to blow them up or steal all their precious sleeper loots.

What makes Eve more than just some spreadsheets is the people who play it, there are some clever people out there that have found ways of bending the game mechanics to their favour.  Allowing for all sorts of fun – but mostly allowing them to blow up people’s stuff in relative safety.

Lets take one example of this game mechanic bending; setting up a wreck with an unstealable item.  The trick here is that even though they can’t steal it, they will still be flagged as red to a corp.  This means you can shoot them without the fear of retribution, only they are red not their corp because they are criminal thieving scum.

Good times.

Skyrim and the mods of loveliness

This is quite an impressive game, decided to get in on PC due to the fact there are 1000+ mods you can install and play about with that improve the look and feel of the game no end.

But there are also quite of lot of naughty ones,  pervs the lot of them.  But I did download one to have a look see.

Lydia likes to watch...

Just be grateful I kept my characters knickers on, for there are mods to make all the ladies naked as well… I don’t know why you’d want all your ladies naked in Skyrim but it is impressive that there are the tools to do all this stuff.

I’m more of a realistic water and lush tundra kind of guy myself.

The website you want to go visit is http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/, it has its own mod manager which makes life mucho easier.  Also on steam you now have the steam workshop which collates all the mods created through the Skyrim creation tool – thankfully they work in conjunction with the mod manager.

Happy rimming!
